    A Child prices are applicable for passengers between 6 and 11 years old.
    When purchasing a JAPAN RAIL PASS on JAPAN RAIL PASS Reservation, the passenger is considered an adult or child based on their age at JAPAN RAIL PASS purchase date.
  • Q5Do children five years old and younger need a ticket?
    A JR considers a child of less than 1 year old as an “infant”, and a child of 1 to 6 years old as a “small child”. Infants and small children ride free of charge.
    However, a child ticket is necessary in the following cases.
    1) When three or more children ages five and under accompany an adult or child
     (Free of charge up to two children, child ticket required for the third and others. Infants are free of charge even when 3 or more are accompanying you.)
    2) When an infant or small child travel in a reserved seat
    3) When the infant or child is travelling alone

    A In some cases, you may not be able to reserve certain trains, times, seats/rooms, routes, or sections on JAPAN RAIL PASS Reservation.

    Examples where it is not possible to obtain a reserved seat
    - You cannot book reserved trains or trains with overlapping travel dates or sections. In this case, either use a non-reserved seat or visit a counter at a station, etc.
    - You cannot book reserved trains or trains with overlapping travel dates or times. Either cancel the reserved train or change the train.
    - You can continue reserving trains until you reach 110 itineraries. The number of itineraries available for booking will not increase even if you change or cancel a reserved itinerary. For any further reservations,use a non-reserved seat or visit a counter at a station, etc. However,you cannot book reserved trains or trains with overlapping travel dates or times even at a counter in a station, etc.

  • Q13If I plan on reserving trains that span multiple days, such as a night train on JAPAN RAIL PASS Reservation, what is the sale date of the reserved seats?
    A - In order to book reserved seat tickets on JAPAN RAIL PASS Reservation, you must first purchase a JAPAN RAIL PASS.
    - Reserved seat booking begins at 10:00 (Japan time UTC+09:00), one month before the departure date of the departure station (same date as the previous month), regardless of whether or not the boarding station is the departure station or a stopover.
    Limited express tickets and reserved seat tickets for trains that span multiple days require a limited express ticket or reserved seat ticket with the actual boarding date, not the departure date from the starting station. When boarding a train from a station partway through the route, check the date of the purchased ticket.
    *When boarding on March 29, reserved seats can be booked starting at 10:00 on March 1.
      However, if the previous month does not have the same date, the following applies.

    However, because JAPAN RAIL PASS sales begin at 4:00 one month before the start date, when purchasing a JAPAN RAIL PASS on JAPAN RAIL PASS Reservation from October 2, reserved seats for October 2 on the limited express train mentioned above can only be booked after 10:00 on September 2 after purchasing a JAPAN RAIL PASS from 4:00 on September 2.

    A When booking reserved seats on JAPAN RAIL PASS Reservation, you may book the seat from 10:00 (Japan time UTC+09:00) one month before the departure time at the departing station (same day on the previous month), and up to 6 minutes before the departure time shown on the timetable for your boarding date at the latest, regardless of whether or not the boarding station is the departure station or a stopover.
    Note that the moment the “Reservation” button is clicked, you may book tickets as late as six minutes before the train departure time.
  • Q19A message indicating that I cannot make a purchase or reservation appeared on JAPAN RAIL PASS Reservation screen. Why couldn’t I make a purchase or reservation?
    A If you are unable to make a purchase or reservation, an error message will appear on JAPAN RAIL PASS Reservation screen.

    (Examples of common messages)
    - “The transaction is not available with this credit card. “

    - “The period of validity for the purchased JAPAN RAIL PASSes overlap.”
    It is not possible to purchase multiple JAPAN RAIL PASSes whose valid dates overlap, regardless of JAPAN RAIL PASS type (Ordinary Car train, Green Car train, 7-day, 14-day, or 21-day pass). Either change the date of your previously purchased JAPAN RAIL PASS or request a refund.

    You can continue reserving trains until you reach 110 itineraries. The number of itineraries available for booking will not increase if you change or cancel a reserved itinerary. For further travel, use a non-reserved seat or visit a counter at a station, etc. However, you cannot book reserved trains or trains with overlapping travel dates or times even at a counter in a station, etc.

Changes and refunds

  • Q1If I don’t pick up my ticket, do I automatically receive a refund?
    A No, you will not.
    The purchaser must request a refund by 23:30 (Japan time UTC+09:00) the day before the start date of the actual pass on JAPAN RAIL PASS Reservation (the process must be completed).

    After picking up your tickets
    As a rule, requests are accepted up to the day before the start date at a pick-up location. To complete a refund, you will need your JAPAN RAIL PASS and any reserved seat tickets.

    There is a ¥560 handling charge for each pass refund, both before and after picking up passes. Thank you for understanding.
  • Q3What kind of JAPAN RAIL PASS changes are available on JAPAN RAIL PASS Reservation?

  • Q5When I changed the details, my credit card was charged twice. Why?
    A When you change passengers, the following happens: 1. Changed JAPAN RAIL PASS payment is processed, 2. Old JAPAN RAIL PASS is refunded.
    JAPAN RAIL PASS Reservation processes are carried out when the completion screen is displayed and a changes complete email is sent from JAPAN RAIL PASS Reservation, however, the refund from the credit card company may be processed at a later date.

    A In order to pick up a reserved or purchased JAPAN RAIL PASS or reserved seat ticket, you will need the “Reservation No.” displayed on the reservation complete screen (also included in the email sent at this time) and the passports of the purchaser and all accompanying passengers. The purchaser and all accompanying passengers must come to the counter at the station, etc. to pick up the passes.

    After you pick up your JAPAN RAIL PASS you can pick up reserved seat tickets at the station reserved seat ticket machine by scanning the ticket QR code (or entering the Reservation No.), then entering your passport number. Reserved seat tickets can also be picked up by bringing your JAPAN RAIL PASS and passport to a counter at a station etc.
    The purchaser or accompanying passengers on their own may pick up reserved seat tickets.

    - If you have booked reserved seats for multiple passengers in the same itinerary, the reserved seat tickets for all passengers will be issued at the same time. They cannot be issued individually for each trip.

    - A reserved seat ticket issued to the user is valid for the user’s pass. Reserved seat tickets issued for other users’ passes are not valid.

Operating instructions

  • Q1An error occurred when I tried to go back to the previous screen on JAPAN RAIL PASS Reservation. What should I do?
    A Unfortunately, you will need to start over from the beginning. If you want to go back to the previous screen on JAPAN RAIL PASS Reservation, click the button on JAPAN RAIL PASS Reservation reservation screen instead of the back button on your device or browser.

    A As the purchaser, you can delete your own personal information If you are unable to purchase a JAPAN RAIL PASS after registering user information on JAPAN RAIL PASS Reservation, or if you desire to delete such information after you purchase a JAPAN RAIL PASS and it is issued.
    In My Menu click “Delete User Information” to delete your personal information.

    If you have purchased a JAPAN RAIL PASS on JAPAN RAIL PASS Reservation but it has not yet been issued, requesting a refund on JAPAN RAIL PASS Reservation allows you to delete personal information from My Menu in the same way as if you had not purchased a pass or after it is issued. There is a handling charge for JAPAN RAIL PASS refunds.

    Also, if you are unable to obtain a refund on JAPAN RAIL PASS Reservation after making a purchase (when the day before the start day has passed), you can delete your personal information on JAPAN RAIL PASS Reservation after your purchased JAPAN RAIL PASS has expired.

Please enter the details of your question or request regarding the processing of your personal data.

    If you encounter problems with the abovementioned process, please send an email to jrpreservation@tabiorder.jp instead.

    In addition to your inquiry or request regarding the processing of your personal data, please also state your “Reservation No. or Passport Number”, your “Name”, and the “Type of JAPAN RAIL PASS You Purchased and the Usage Starting Date”.
