This page contains a glossary of terms.

  1. Route:
    This refers to the route from the specified departure station to the arrival station, and may require transfer to multiple trains depending on the route
  2. Train:
    Trains used within each route

  1. Range of selectable stations


     Although all stations can be selected, the following types of stations cannot.

    • Hakata Minami Station and stations that only operate during certain hours
    • Gala Yuzawa Station (Available during the winter season)
    • Stations closed during the winter (While operations are closed)


    Stations on the following 16 non-JR lines can be selected. Note, however, that some stations are not available.

    • Iwate Galaxy Railway,
    • Aoimori Railway,
    • Izu Kyūkō Line
    • Izu Hakone Railway,
    • Ise Railway,
    • Kitakinki Tango Railway
    • Shinano Railway Line,
    • Chizu Express,
    • Tobu Railway,
    • Tosa Kuroshio Railway,
    • Asa Seaside Railway,
    • Fuji Kyuko,
    • Hokuetsu Express
    • Echigo Tokimeki Railway,
    • Ainokaze Toyama Railway,
    • IR Ishikawa Railway

    Even if the above stations can be selected, they may be temporarily unavailable due to disasters, etc.

  2. You can specify station names in English. You can select from station names that begin with the characters you entered.
  3. Station names are displayed in alphabetical order.
  4. When more than 20 stations are available, nothing will be displayed.
  5. You can select up to three transit stations (You can also skip this step).
  6. When you select multiple transit stations, the route is searched in the specified order.
  7. The same station cannot be selected for the departure station, arrival station, and transit station.
  8. The name of the operator is displayed after the station name for non-JR lines.
    Example: NAGANO (Shinano Railway)
  9. When there are multiple stations with the same spelling, they are shown in a list as follows.
    Example: SENDAI (Kagoshima Line) / SENDAI (Tohoku/Senseki Line)
      SHIN-FUJI (Nemuro Line) / SHIN-FUJI (Shinkansen)

[Search conditions] Date/time selection

  1. The date can be specified one month in advance of the start date (Japan time) and within the valid period of the JAPAN RAIL PASS.
    Note that before 10:00 A.M., you can specify the date up to one day before one month in advance of the start date.

    Example: When boarding on March 29, reserved seat tickets can be booked starting at 10:00 on March 1.
    However, if the previous month does not have the same date, the following applies.

  2. You can specify the time within the following range.
    Time within +6 minutes after the current time (Note that the current time refers to the time when the search was initiated.)
    You can specify any time.

  1. Departure time search: Searches for a train (route) that leaves the departure station after the specified date/time.
  2. Arrival time search: Searches for a train (route) that arrives at the arrival station before the specified date/time.

[Search conditions] Optional travel by Shinkansen

  1. If you specify “No (check mark off)”, the following Shinkansen lines will not be searched.
    • Tokaido/Sanyo/Kyushu Shinkansen lines
    • Tohoku, Yamagata, Akita, and Hokkaido Shinkansen lines
    • Joetsu and Hokuriku Shinkansen lines (including trains departing from/arriving at Gala Yuzawa)
    In this case, you cannot search the following departure/arrival stations.
    Shinkansen-only stations such as Shin Fuji, Gifu-Hashima, Shin Kobe, Shin-Onomichi, Higashi-Hiroshima, Shin-Iwakuni, Gala Yuzawa, etc.
  2. Even if you specify “Yes (check mark on)”, Nozomi and Mizuho trains will not be searched.

Displayed routes and trains

  1. Routes with two or more stops at the same station will not be displayed.
  2. Routes with the shortest travel time will be displayed first.
  3. In some cases, trains that are not available on this site and seats that cannot be selected will be shown.
  4. Trains overtaken by other trains such as local trains that stop at each station and sightseeing trains may not be displayed. In such cases, try the following.
    • Specify the departure and arrival stations in the section where your desired train operates.
    • Specify a departure time that is close to the departure/arrival time of your desired train.
    • Select “No Shinkansen travel (check mark off)”.
    • Specify a transit station of your desired train as the transit station.
  5. Up to three routes will be displayed.
    Displayed routes may show a later train on the same route or a different route.
    A single train may be displayed as a different route. (Such as a double-decker train with the first floor and second floor in different routes.)
  6. When JR stations and non-JR line stations are connecting stations, the results will be the same regardless of which station is selected.
    Example: Nagano Station (JR/Shinano Railway), Joetsumyoko Station (JR/Echigo Tokimeki Railway), Kanazawa Station (JR/IR Ishikawa Railway), Tsu Station (JR/Ise Railway), etc.
  7. Although a certain amount of time is set aside for transferring between trains, if you have a lot of luggage and require more time, or need to purchase anything before boarding, make sure you keep an eye on your transfer time.
  8. Normal operating time may be shown for displayed routes. If trains are delayed or service is suspended, it may not be possible to travel on the displayed route.
    Check service information and other notices inside the station and train car when traveling.
  9. Depending on the train or section, you may not be able to book a reserved seat even if seats are available due to number restrictions on seats using a JAPAN RAIL PASS.

Reserved seat ticket booking

  1. You can continue reserving trains until you reach 110 itineraries. The number of itineraries available for booking will not increase if you change or cancel a reserved itinerary. For further travel, use a non-reserved seat or visit a counter at a station, etc.
    However, you cannot book reserved trains or trains with overlapping travel dates or times even at a counter in a station, etc.
    You cannot reserve tineraries that include trains which cannot actually be boarded.
  2. On this service, you cannot make reservations for a time when you will already be traveling, or for trains that overlap a section you will be traveling through on the same day. In this case, use a non-reserved seat or visit a counter at a station, etc.
    However, you cannot book reserved trains or trains with overlapping travel dates or times even at a counter in a station, etc.
    You cannot reserve itineraries that include trains which cannot actually be boarded.
  3. The following seats/rooms that require additional fees cannot be reserved on this site (Please purchase the required ticket at the counter).
    • Gran Class,
    • DX Green,
    • Premium Green,
    • Green Car (ordinary car only)
    • Local private room,
    • Green private room
  4. Routes that include trains with additional fares or charges cannot be selected. (Please purchase the required ticket at the counter)
    • Platform liner train,
    • Trains that transit through non-JR lines*※
      *The following operators (sections) can be selected and reserved (There is no need to purchase additional tickets).
      1. Aoimori Railway (from Aomori to Hachinohe),
      2. IR Ishikawa Railway (from Kanazawa toTsubata)
  5. Non-reserved seats cannot be selected when selecting a seat/room. When traveling by non-reserved seat, search and make reservations excluding trains with non-reserved seats.
  6. If there are any trains on the route that are only non-reserved seat trains, those routes cannot be selected. Search and make reservations excluding trains with non-reserved seats.
  7. If it is not possible to reserve the appropriate number of seats for your passengers (available seats are displayed with an X), the route cannot be selected. Separate the sections and conduct separate searches to make reservations, or change the date, search again and make reservations.
  8. Routes with trains that pass the 4:00 A.M. mark cannot be selected. Separate the sections and conduct separate searches to make reservations
  9. If the train travel date falls outside of the JRP valid periods, the route cannot be selected. or change the date, search again and make reservations.
  10. Routes for trains whose travel ends between Echigo Yuzawa and Gala Yuzawa cannot be selected. Remove the section between Echigo Yuzawa and Gala Yuzawa and search again
    (You can travel between Echigo Yuzawa and Gala Yuzawa without reserving a separate ticket).
  11. Routes that include trains that switch partway from limited express to local service (the trains in the following example) and trains that straddle local service sections cannot be selected. Change the departure or arrival station and search again.
     Example:
     Higashi-Muroran - Muroran > Change to Higashi-Muroran departure/arrival
     Katsuura - Awa-Kamogawa > Change to Katsuura departure/arrival
  12. If there are more than four trains on the route where seats can be reserved, those routes cannot be selected. Separate the sections and conduct separate searches to make reservations
  13. When a single train operates under different names, the name of the train on the selected route and the name of the train with the reserved seat may differ.
    Example:
     Hashidate and Maizuru (Kyoto - Ayabe)
  14. If a route contains a section where service is suspended over a long period of time, the route cannot be selected.

Seat selection information

  1. Any Seat:
    Reserves seats for the appropriate number of passengers to sit together.
    > When two or more passengers are traveling together and it is not possible to reserve seats together, “Include Separated Seats” can be selected. In this case, the seats will be separated but they will be in the same car.
  2. Select From Seat Map:
      Displays the seat map so you can select seats. However, you cannot select seats that are separated by more than three rows (seats may be separated within two rows).
    Depending on seat reservation status, you may not be able to choose “Select From Seat Map”. You also may not be able to choose “Select From Seat Map” depending on the seat layout of the train.
