How to book reserved seat tickets

Step 1user registration

Information

1 Select “Create a New Account” on the top page.

2 Enter the email address and password for this site.

Caution

  1. Make sure to fill in your name exactly as it appears on your passport. Your name will be checked when your JAPAN RAIL PASS is issued.
  2. Read the section on handling of personal information. Once you scroll all the way to the bottom, you will be able to select the check box.
  3. Read the Terms of Service.
    Once you scroll all the way to the bottom, you will be able to select the check box.
  4. The person who registers as a user is the representative when purchasing a JAPAN RAIL PASS.
    A representative is required when purchasing a JAPAN RAIL PASS on this site.
    Up to 6 passes can be purchased, including 1 representative and 5 accompanying passengers.
    However, after the passes are purchased, the representative may not be removed by changing the number of passengers.
    To remove the representative, first obtain a refund of the purchased JAPAN RAIL PASS, then register a new user and purchase the required JAPAN RAIL PASS.

Complete user registration

3 Once temporary registration is complete, a “User Information Registration” email will be sent. Click the URL in the email.

4 Once registration is complete, a “User Information Registration Complete Notification” email will be sent. You can then log in using the registered account on the registration complete screen.

Step 2JAPAN RAIL PASS purchase

Information

1After logging in, select “Reserve JAPAN RAIL PASS” in My Menu.

2 Enter your JAPAN RAIL PASS requirements. The pass can be purchased as early as 4:00 A.M. (Japan time - UTC + 09:00) up to one month before the start date. Passes can be purchased up to six people, including children and adults.

Example: If the start date is March 29, the purchase date is from 4:00 on March 1.
However, if the previous month does not have the same date, the following applies.

3Please enter your planned arrival location. If you cannot find the applicable airport or port for your planned arrival location, select “Other Airport or Port”.

※ If you will board a connecting flight at your port of entry, make sure to select your final destination (airport).
(Example: Charles de Gaulle Airport via Narita Airport to Chitose Airport > Select “New Chitose Airport”)

Enter JAPAN RAIL PASS user information

4 Enter the name and passport number of the purchaser. The registered user information is automatically entered in the representative passenger field. The representative passenger or representative passenger name cannot be changed.

Caution

  1. Make sure to read the Terms of Service.
    Once you scroll all the way to the bottom, you will be able to select the check box.

Complete your JAPAN RAIL PASS purchase

5 Confirm the purchase details and payment amount. If there are no errors, enter your credit card information.

6 Once the purchase is complete, a “Purchase Complete Notification” email will be sent.

Card Sales Slip

7 You can print a card sales slip from the purchase complete screen. It can also be saved as a PDF.

The JAPAN RAIL PASS sales total appears in the total amount. The sales total is not shown for JAPAN RAIL PASS refunds. Refund handling charges incurred when a JAPAN RAIL PASS is refunded will be shown on the slip. Refund handling charges are also shown when one or more passengers have been removed.

Step 3Booking a reserved seat ticket

Information

1 In the My Menu JAPAN RAIL PASS List, select “Reserve a Seat” for the applicable JAPAN RAIL PASS.

2 Enter the search conditions. If you wish to transit through a specific station, select “Add Transit Station”. You can select up to three stations. You can search using the departure or arrival time for the date/time. After entering the search conditions, select the number of passengers. Reserved seat tickets can be booked as early as 10:00 one month before the boarding date and as late as up to six minutes before the departure time. (Excluding system maintenance times)

Example: When boarding on March 29, reserved seat tickets can be booked starting at 10:00 on March 1.
However, if the previous month does not have the same date, the following applies.

Caution

  1. Reservations are not available for passengers who have already booked a reserved seat ticket for the same date and time.
  2. No further reserved seats can be booked once the itinerary or booked trains exceeds 110 items. In this case, you may use the unreserved seats (standing room for all reserved seating trains) in each train. (Note that the number of booked itineraries and trains will not be reduced even if you make changes or cancel your plans.)

Route search results

3 Up to three routes are displayed in search results. You may reserve seats on a maximum of three trains per route. You can switch search results using the tab at the top. Once you select your desired route, detailed information is displayed. Click “Select” to choose the route.

4 You can change the conditions at the bottom of the screen and search again.

5 [Seat/room selection]

The following types of non-smoking seats/rooms are available.

  • Non-smoking: This is a non-smoking car.
  • Non-smoking (Near smoking room): This is a non-smoking car. A smoking room is located nearby.
  • Smoking: This is a smoking car.

The following types of seat/room amenities are available.

  • Office seat: This is a seat with a power plug.
  • Seats with extra-large luggage space: Passengers that bring extra-large luggage (total outside dimensions of baggage length, width and height from 160 cm (approx. 63 in) to 250 cm (approx. 98 in) on the Tokaido/Sanyo/Kyushu Shinkansen lines must reserve a seat with extra-large luggage space.
    Seats with extra-large luggage space are those with luggage storage behind the rearmost seats of the car.
    If you plan to use a seat without extra-large luggage space or a non-reserved seat, you may bring luggage that has total outside dimensions of baggage length, width and height within 160 cm (approx. 63 in).
    You may not bring extra-large luggage that has total outside dimensions of baggage length, width and height exceeding 160 cm (approx. 63 in) when using rearmost seats without space for extra-large luggage in some cars. In this case, reserve a seat in another car with extra-large luggage space.

This is the rearmost seat in the car, and reclining may not be possible if luggage is placed behind the seat.

6 [Seat selection]

Seats can be selected as follows.

  • Any Seat: Nearby seats are automatically assigned. However, if there are not many available seats left, the location may be apart from your luggage.
  • Select From Seat Map: You can select any available seats from a map. You must select the appropriate number of seats for the passengers.
  • Include Separated Seats: Seats are automatically assigned. When travelling with multiple passengers, seats may be separated within the same car.

7 Select the appropriate number of seats for the passengers.
The following types of seats are available.

  • Rearmost seat: Reclining may not be possible when luggage is placed behind the rearmost seat.
  • Narrow seats: Seats ABDE in row 12 and 13 on train no. 11 for the Hikari and Kodama trains on the Tokaido and Sanyo shinkansen lines are somewhat narrower than normal seats. Thank you for your understanding.
  • Wheelchair accessible seats: On Shinkansen and conventional limited express lines, some trains are equipped with wheelchair accessible seats. If you would like to use a wheelchair accessible seat, please visit or call the JR Ticket Office (Midori-no-madoguchi) directly once your schedule is set, then pick up your ticket at the same station before boarding the train. You may request a wheelchair seat starting from 10:00 one month prior to the boarding date. However, you may not be able to take the desired train if all seats are sold out, etc., so be sure to make a request as early as possible. Please note that reservations for wheelchair accessible seats are not accepted on this website.

8 You can display the seat information for other cars with the same seat/room information using the car information.
You cannot select seats that span multiple cars. Please select seats in the same car.
The following types of train cars are available.

  • Mezzanine cabin: Passengers on double-decker trains can access these seats without climbing stairs (flat seat).
  • A/B compartment: These seats are in a different area than other seats.
  • 1F: First floor seat on a double-decker train.
  • 2F: Second floor seat on a double-decker train.

Confirm reserved seat booking

9 After confirming the details of your reserved seats, complete the reservation. Once the reservation is complete, a “Seat Reservation Complete Notification” email will be sent.
